Richard Karn Wilson was born on 17th February, 1956 in Seattle, Washington to Lousie and Gene Wilson. His father served in World War II, as a Seabee (Construction Battalion member). He also has a sibling sister named Sue. Richard went on to attend Roosevelt High School as a teenager and when he graduated from there he enrolled himself in the University of Washington. In the university, he became a part of the world known fraternity named ‘Beta Theta Pi’. Alongside that, he also gained more experience in drama and theater at the Edinburgh Festival.
