Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. was born on 20th October 1958 in the New York City. His father was from Denmark while his mother was an American. His family has moved to different places; they first went to Venezuela, followed by Denmark and then got settled in Argentina where Mortensen went to primary school.
After his parents got divorced when he was 11, he moved to New York with his mother and graduated from Watertown High School in 1976.
