Jerry West’s Early Life
Jerry West was born on March 28, 1938. Born and raised in a poor household, Jerry was the fifth of six children. In his early teens, he lost his brother in a war which had a negative impact on him turning him shy, weak and infirm.
He had to receive vitamin injection and was secluded from children’s sport. However, that did not stop him from shooting basketballs through a hoop nailed to a storage shed outside a neighbour’s house. Be it mud or snow, Jerry practiced shooting until his fingers bled. While practicing dribbling, he frequently got injured and bruised his face. He would often listen to West Virginia Basketball games on the radio after his practice. Due to his meticulous practice he made the varsity squad at East Bank High School. Taking conditioning and defence lessons during his teenage, Jerry soon became the captain of his freshman team and as he grew 6 ft in height he became the first prep player in state history to score 900 points in a season, averaging 32.2 points. He laid the first stone to his successful career by winning 1956 state title for East Bank. He joined West Virginia University and achieved a perfect record of 17 wins without a loss over the course of the season. In 1960 Summer Olympics, as a co-captain of the U.S. Olympic basketball team, he won a gold medal.

In the 1960 NBA Draft, The Minneapolis Lakers chose Jerry West with the second overall pick behind Robertson. Under the captainship of Hall of fame forward Elgin Baylor, Jerry West played as a guard for The Lakers. The Lakers improved from their previous 25-win season to 36 wins with their dynamic duo – the low post scorer, Baylor (Mr. Inside) and the long-distance shooter, Jerry West (Mr. Outside). Despite his rigorous practice, Lakers lost to Celtics in his first NBA finals. He was renowned by his associates even without winning an NBA championship. After losing eight of nine times in NBA finals he was unbelievably frustrated. In 1971-72 season Lakers had the best single season record in NBA history, after winning 33 games in a row! In 1974, Jerry West retired due to injury in the previous season. Having scored 25,192 points in 932 games, Jerry managed to be NBA’s third leading career scorer.
