Jim was born on 27th June 1970 in California. When he was young, his parents divorced. His parents got his joint custody. His schooling took place at Diamond Bar, which is in the L.A. County. He studied at the Diamond Bar High School.

In 1988 Edmond started playing in the minor league. He was selected by the California Angels and passed on to the Bend Bucks, and he played in 35 games. Next year he played 31 games for the Quad Cities Angels. In 1990 he moved up to join the Palm Springs Angels and continued there in 1991.
Next year got into the Midland Angels and later moved to Edmonton Trappers. He played in these minor leagues before making his major league debut for the California Angels in September 1993. He continued to play in the team till 1999.
