José Aldo da Silva Oliveira Junior was born in Manaus, Brazil on September 9, 1986, to his parents Rocilene Socorro Souza and José Aldo da Silva Oliveira.
In his early years, he was interested in football and wanted to become a professional football player. However, he later went on to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu with a trainer. At 17, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to get trained in mixed martial arts.
