Stephen Douglas Kerr was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 27 to parents Malcolm H. Kerr and Ann. He has three other siblings and has a grandfather who supported the cause of Near East relief in its campaign to rescue women and orphans post the disastrous Armenian Genocide in the Aleppo and Marash cities.
A large part of his childhood was spent in Middle Eastern Countries, mainly Lebanon. As for college, he took classes at the Cairo American College in Egypt and also the American Community School in Beirut. The Palisades High School in LA was also graced by his presence, as did the University of Arizona when he graduated in the year 1988 with a Bachelor’s of General Studies.
It was from the years 1983 to 1988 that he started playing basketball for the University of Arizona. The summer of 86 saw Kerr being named to the USA Basketball team that participated in the FIBA World Championship held in Spain. He also famously helped the Arizona Wildcats make it to the final four within the NCAA Division I basketball tournament. His NCAA records during this period are well known by the basketball fraternity.
The Phoenix Suns picked up Kerr in the 1988 NBA draft in the second round of selections. But he was later traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 89. He played 3 seasons followed by a partial season in 93 over with Orlando Magic. 1993 saw him signing up with the Chicago Bulls, playing a key role in winning the 1997 NBA finals against the Utah Jazz team. Another notch on Kerr’s belt was him winning the 3-Point Shootout at the 1997 All-Star Game.
Kerr was traded again to the San Antonio Spurs offseason the next year. This serendipitous departure let him score his fourth consecutive NBA title. The Spurs were also seen making it to the 1999 NBA Finals with this being their first appearance in NBA history. This year also proved another win for Kerr against the New York Knicks.
