Born on August 20th, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, King studied at John Adams High. He graduated from school in 1951 and went on to study at Kent State University. After dropping out from University, he decided to run an illegal book-keeping operation and was charged with the crime of murdering two men in separate incidents 13 years apart.
He was not convicted in the first case because the killing was deemed as self-defense. However, he was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the second case in 1967. However, a pardon was issued after letters written by eminent personalities spoke on his behalf.
Don married his wife, Henrietta in 1959. The two stayed together for 59 years until Henrietta’s death in 2010. He has three children, Debbie, Carl and Eric and five grandchildren.
King’s foray into the boxing world was when he managed to convince Muhammad Ali to take part in an exhibition match for a children’s hospital in Cleveland, with the help of singer Lloyd Price.
He had formed a partnership with one of the local promoters, Don Elbaum very early on in his career.
In 1974, he pulled off the feat of arranging a fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. It was a highly anticipated match and a lot of promoters wanted their finger in the pie. However, King already had a deal in place with the government of Zaire and so he succeeded in pulling off the $10 million-dollar contract.
Carl Lombardo, an underworld tycoon underwrote the show for a total of $1.3 million. All of this was King’s doing. Chuck Wepner and Muhammad Ali went at it till the latter was knocked out in the ninth round. It is rumoured that Sylvester Stallone bore witness to the match and it is this event that helped him frame the idea of the film Rocky in his head, which he went on to produce and even win an Oscar for.
King organised the “Thrilla in Manilla” which was a fight between Ali and Frazier. Apart from organising these matches, he was building his own roster of heavyweight champions which included the likes of, Alexis Argüello, Salvador Sánchez, Roberto Durán, Wilfred Benítez, Wilfredo Gómez, and Larry Holmes.
Post-1970’s King was still the choice of many boxers to promote their fights. Some of these boxers include Bernard Hopkins, Carlos Zárate, Mike Tyson and Mike McCallum.

In 1975, he was declared Man of the Year in the National Black Hal of Fame.
In 1976, King was honoured with being the Man of the year by the NAACP.
In 1981, the President’s Inaugural Committee awarded him with the George Herbert Walker Bush Award.
The North American Boxing Federation declared Don the Promoter of the year in 1983.
In 1997, he was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.
