Christopher Hughes better known as Chris Hughes, the industrious co-founder and former spokesperson of popular social networking site Facebook is a zesty young American entrepreneur. Over the course of his illustrious career, Chris has played key roles in shaping many of the business ventures he has been associated with, like General Catalyst and Jumo.
Most recently, he has served as the publisher and editor and chief of The New Republic, one of the most popular magazines in America much of whose stakes were acquired by Chris in 2012. However, his failure to lead the magazine to the unprecedented glory which was something he had planned, Chris had to sell his stakes in 2016. Let’s find out more about how much is Chris Hughes’s net worth in 2019.
Chris Hughes was born into a humble family of 3 living in Hickory, North Carolina headed by his paper salesman father Arlen “Ray” Hughes and ably supported by his mathematics teacher mother, Brenda Hughes. Destined to make it big in life, Chris secured a position at the prestigious Harvard University after completing his school education from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. While at Harvard, he met and befriended Mark Zuckerberg, who by the way needs no introduction if you are familiar with Facebook which is sort of a given in this age of the all-powerful internet.
Along with Mark and his other roommates which included Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Andrew McCollum, Chris went on to become one of the key developers of a social networking site meant primarily for the students of their University, which we now know as Facebook. Unlike his other counterparts, however, who opted to drop out of college to devote their time to Facebook, Chris Hughes chose to return to Harvard to complete his bachelor’s degree with a magna cum laude in History and Literature before heading back to his friends in Palo Alto and re-joining Facebook. He has never looked back ever since!
As for his personal life, an ardent supporter of LGBTQ marital rights, Chris Hughes got hitched to long-time boyfriend, Sean Eldridge in 2012. Formerly the political director of Freedom to Marry, a non-profit organisation that arduously fought for same-sex marriage rights in the United States of America eventually registering a victory in 2015, Sean Eldridge now serves as the president of Stand Up America, a non-profit organisation that he founded to resist the legislative policies of American President Donald Trump.
While at Harvard, Chris Hughes was basically responsible for the development of many of the iconic features of Facebook, product suggestions and Beta testing. Initially reluctant to morph Facebook into a global social networking site, he eventually became its spokesperson in 2006. However, he left Facebook in 2007 and went on to take up the position of Entrepreneur in Residence at renowned venture capital firm General Catalyst in 2009.
Chris Hughes added another feather to his hat with Jumo, a non-profit social network organization that enabled prospective philanthropists to reach out to those in need and therefore, bring about a change in the lives of the not so fortunate, which he founded and became the executive director of in 2010.
Chris Hughes’ only unsuccessful venture till date has been his failed attempt to revamp popular magazine The New Republic into a completely digitalised magazine, a move that sparked discontent amongst many of The Republic’s former employees driving them to resign. Eventually, Chris realised his error but by then the company had sunk into the loss, and he decided to sell his stakes in 2016 to Oregon publisher Win McCormack.
