Thomas Anderson, popularly known as Tom Anderson, the co-founder of MySpace. He is known to many MySpace users as “Tom from Myspace” because he would be the first friend a user would have on creating an account on this social networking site. Keep reading to know more about Tom Anderson’s net worth in 2019.
Born on November 8, 1970, in San Diego, California, Tom worked as a hacker form his teen years. He reportedly hacked into the server of Chase Manhattan Bank at the age of fourteen. The Federal Bureau of Investigation eventually caught him but refrained from arresting him as he was a minor. He went by the pseudonym of “Lord Flathead”.
He studied English at the University of California, Berkley and then became the lead singer of a band called “Swank.” Tom moved to Taiwan for a couple of years before coming back to study Critical Film Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Anderson uses most contemporary social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Google+.
Tom first met Chris DeWolfe, with whom he co-founded MySpace, in 2000. The two worked in XDrive which was a digital storage company in which Tom worked as a product tester and a copywriter. They worked there till 2001 when XDrive went bankrupt.
The duo then founded ResponseBase, which was a marketing company. They sold this company to eUniverse in 2002.
In 2003, Anderson and a couple of other employees from eUniverse started MySpace in 2003. It was founded partially as a reaction to contemporary site Friendster which would block accounts that refused to use real names.
Intermix Media which was founded as a kind of successor of eUniverse helped MySpace get immense popularity among a large cross-section of users.
Anderson proceeded to become the president of the company when Intermix Media and Myspace were sold off to News Corp for $580 million.
In 2009, he was removed as President of MySpace.
In 2012, he became an advisor to RocketFrog, an L.A. based company, which created a Facebook app.
In 2009, Tom Anderson made an appearance in Funny People, a comedy starring Adam Sandler.
Awards and Achievements
Anderson’s most notable achievement in his field is being one of the co-founders of MySpace. It was quite a fad during its time. It was like the Facebook of those times and had millions of users.
Net Worth of Tom Anderson
Tom Anderson has a net worth of $65 million. Even though MySpace was sold for the hefty amount of $580 million, Anderson himself did not receive the amount. The decline in the popularity of MySpace contributes to the reduction in Anderson’s wealth.
Tom Anderson, Chris DeWolfe and the employees of the erstwhile eUniverse thought of the idea of creating MySpace when they saw the rival social networking site Friendster. Their idea did pay off, that is only till 2009. During its height of popularity, MySpace employed 1600 people. By June 2009, 30% of its employees lost their jobs. MySpace ceased to be relevant after the arrival of Facebook. Most young users of social networking sites are not even aware of the existence of MySpace. This is an indication of the growth of the times and how everything struggles to remain relevant to a world characterised by constant change.
Tom does act as an adviser to RocketFrog, however, it does not compare to the time when he enjoyed being the creator behind something as revolutionary as MySpace. He spends most of his days relaxing now, indulging in his passion for Travel Photography. He has publicly retired but still keeps up with the technological world.
