Andrea Mitchell was born on October 30, 1946; in New Rochelle, New York. She is from a Jewish family and her mother was an administrator at the New York Institute of Technology; while her father was the CEO and partner of a furniture manufacturing company. Both her parents worked in Manhattan, New York. Her father was associated with the Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle for 40 years as the President. Her brother later moved to British Columbia.
Mitchell studied at the New Rochelle High School and then did her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature in 1967. While she was at University of Pennsylvania, she also became the news director of student radio station.
After her graduation, she continued her stay in Philadelphia. She became a reporter to the KYW radio and became the city correspondent and also worked for Mitchell rose to prominence as the station’s City Hall correspondent, during the Mayor Frank Rizzo’s administration and also reported for sister broadcasting station KYW-TV.
Mitchell was earlier married to Gill Jackson, which did not last long and they divorced. On 6th April, 1997; she married the former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, after a long relationship.

In 1978, after completing two years with CBS, she moved to NBC’s network news operation, and since then she has remained with NBC. She initially joined as the general correspondent. Then she became the NBC News energy correspondent. She reported extensively during the late-1970s energy crisis and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. From 1981, she also covered the White House and in 1988 she was made the chief congressional correspondent till 1992 and then made the Chief White House Correspondent from 1993 to 1994.
