Mark Freuder Knopfler was born to an English mother, Louisa Mary and a Hungarian émigré father, Erwin Knopfler in Glasgow, Scotland on 12th August, 1949. The Knopfler family later moved to Blyth in North East England where he and his brother, David, attended Gosforth Grammar School.
Inspired by his Uncle Kingsley playing boogie-woogie on the piano, Mark developed an intense passion for music when he was about eight years old. While pursuing his English degree from University of Leeds, he and Steve Philips began playing out under the name ‘Duolian String Pickers’, during which he developed his trademark finger picking style.
