Matt Sorum was born on 19th November 1960 in California. His birth name is Matthew William Sorum. At the age of 4, he started playing the drums after watching The Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr on The Ed Sullivan Show. In his high school, he was part of a band Mission Viejo. His parents are David Sorum and Joanne Sorum.
From the year 1989-1990 Sorum was a drummer of a rock band ‘The Cult’. Sorum joined the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses as the replacement for Steven Adler. Sorum gained recognition with this band where his drumming can be heard in ‘The Spaghetti Incident’ and both the parts of ‘Use Your Illusion’ excluding the Civil War track. In 1995, Sorum with Gilby Clarke and Slash drummed on their first album ‘It’s Five O’clock Somewhere’ after forming the rock supergroup Slash’s Snakepit.
Sorum also drummed for the 1995 film ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie’. He along with Duff McKagan formed ‘Neurotic Outsiders’ supergroup. In 1997, Guns N’ Roses lead vocalist Axl Rose, fired Sorum over the argument of including Paul Tobias. In 1998, he released his drum instructional videos showcasing his techniques. In 1999, he returned to join ‘The Cult’.
In 1999, Sorum formed a band Velvet Revolver along with Slash and McKagan. Their debut album ‘Contraband’ was released in 2004. After that, they went on a worldwide tour. In 2004 Sorum’s first ever solo album ‘Hollywood Zen’ was released. On July 3, 2007, Velvet Revolver’s second album ‘Libertard’ got released. Sorum and Guns N’ Roses lead vocalist Axl Rose re-established their friendship in April 2006. In an interview, Sorum confessed to smuggling cocaine.
