The Edge was born on the 8th of August, 1961. Although, he was born in Essex, England, he was raised in Ireland where his family had moved while he was still very young. His parents, Garvin and Gwenda Evans were originally from Llanelli, which is a coastal town in South Wales. He was the second child to be born to his parents with his elder brother being Dik.
He also has a younger sister named Gillian. His father, who was an engineer, used to work for a local electronics company called Plessey. In 1962, the company offered him a promotion along with a transfer to Dublin. It is was in Dublin that The Edge spent most of his growing years.
For his primary schooling, he went to the “St. Andrew’s National School”. He also received piano and guitar lessons throughout his childhood, a knack he shared with his brother, Richard a.k.a. Dik. In the year 1976, while Edge was still 15 years old, he started a band along with some of his classmates and his elder brother, Dik. Edge had got married in the year 1983 to Aislinn O’Sullivan, who was his girlfriend from school. The couple has three children named Hollie, Arran and Blue Angel. Although, the couple had already separated in 1990, they had to wait to get legally divorced until 1995, which is when the Irish laws first allowed it. He later began dating American dancer, Morleigh Steinberg in 1993. They even have a son together.
“U2” was formed with The Edge and his pals from school along with his brother who left very early to join another band. The band started doing live shows at small venues, and they started developing their own music in 1977. By 1980, they were doing foreign tours, and they were able to launch their first album, “Boy” soon after. One of their most successful tours was the October tour, in the build-up to which the band was at the verge of breaking up.
It was during this time that The Edge along with other members of the band got involved with a group called “Shalom Tigers.” Later, after reuniting with the band, he wrote the hit single, “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” His guitar has a unique style, which is achieved through extreme manipulations of a sound processor.
