Al Sharpton Early Life
Al was born on October 3, 1954, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City to Ada (née Richards) and Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr. When Al was 4-years old he preached his first sermon on his tour with gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson.
In 1963, Al’s father left Ada to have a relationship with his half-sister. Ada worked as a maid but, had to depend on welfare and move from middle-class Hollis, Queens to public housing in Brownsville of Brooklyn. Al graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn and studied at Brooklyn College for two years until 1975. Al married Kathy Jordan and they have two children named Dominique and Ashley.

Jesse Jackson appointed Al to serve as a young director of Operation Breadbasket in New York City (1969). Al founded the National Youth Movement and raised resources for youth (1971).He was youth director for the presidential campaign of African-American Congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm (1972). Al served as James Brown’s tour manager (1973-1980).
Al protested against racial, religious discrimination and became known nationally. On December 20, 1986, in Howard Beach of Queens, some white men attacked three African-American men who were chased onto the Belt Parkway. There, Michael Griffith was killed by a passing motorist.
Later, on December 27, Al led 1,200 demonstrators on a march on the streets throughout Howard Beach. Al’s role made him famous. He led protests after the death of Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea, who was shot to death by NYPD officers (1999) but were acquitted. Al argued that Diallo’s death was due to police brutality and racial profiling. Amadou Diallo’s family was awarded $3 million.
In December 1998, police shot Tyisha Miller, a 19-year-old African-American woman, in central Riverside, California. Tyisha was found unconscious in a locked car with a flat tire and engine running. Her car was parked at a local gas station. Her relatives called 911 when the Riverside Police Department officers responded and discovered a gun on her lap.Tyshia was shaking and foaming at the mouth. Officers broke into the car. One reached for the weapon but she awoke and clutched the weapon leading the officers to shoot 23 times to kill her. The officers were all acquitted. Alled, a group to protest around the busy SR 91 and was arrested.
On November 25, 2006, Sean Bell was shot and killed by plainclothes detectives in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York. Three of five detectives faced manslaughter charges but, was found not guilty. Al and others protested peacefully on May 7, 2008, around major river crossings in New York City at Brooklyn Bridge, Queens-borough Bridge, Tri-borough Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Queens–Midtown Tunnel. Aland 200 protestors were arrested.
Al was jailed for 90 days after trespassing in the U.S. military in Puerto Rico (2001). He was held there for 2 days before he was moved to Metropolitan Detention Centre, Brooklyn (May 25, 2001). Eventually, Al was transferred to Federal Bureau of Prisons until August 17, 2001.
On August 28, 2017, the 44thanniversary March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. announced: “I Have a Dream”.
