Eddie Lee Long was a senior albeit a rather controversial American pastor. For much of his career, 30 long years to be precise, Eddie was a pastor at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb County, Georgia. However, despite being a priest he was surrounded by controversies almost his entire life, thanks to the various sexual abuse lawsuits filed against him, the Senate investigation conducted to examine his income source, the controversial divorce with his 1st wife and above all his archaic and homophobic beliefs. Let’s find out more about how much is Eddie Long’s net worth in 2019.
Born to a reverend father Floyd M. Long Jr. and a homemaker mother Hattie Long in Huntersville, North Carolina, Eddie Long followed in his father’s footsteps and became a priest. Although, the priesthood was not his first choice of vocation, as he had opted to work for the Ford Motor Corporation after obtaining a B.A. in Business Administration from the North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.
However, he soon got dismissed from there and shifted base to Atlanta. It was here that he began to take an interest in theology and became a pastor in a small church in Jonesboro, Georgia before becoming a senior priest at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a position he held from 1987-2017.
Eddie Long has been married twice. His 1st marriage to Dabara S. Houston ended in a scandalous divorce where she accused him of mental and physical harassment. He even lost the custody of their only son Edward Long to her in the battle.
In 1990, he married his 2nd wife, Vanessa Griffin. After about 21 years the marriage hit rock bottom when Eddie was stormed with allegations of sexually abusing minor boys of his church. In 2012 however, the couple reunited when Vanessa announced that she wanted to give another chance to her marriage and return to her New Birth family.
Eddie Long breathed his last in January 2017 when he succumbed to cancer after a prolonged battle with the vicious disease.
While at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Eddie Long did bring about an increase in the number of churchmen from about 300 when he joined to about 25000 at the time of his death. In most of his sermons, he delved into the concept of “chain of command” which he believed to be the divine order established by God.
According to the concept, there exists a certain relationship of dominance and submission between superiors and their subordinates and to defy this relationship is to defy the will of God. Despite the many scandals that occurred during his career, he was given the title of Bishop in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship in 1994 and was chosen as the officiator of the funeral of the great civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife Mrs. Coretta Scott King in 2006.
He also wrote various well-received books, like ‘Your Vision Is Too Small,’ ‘The Power of a Wise Woman,’ ‘The Church: Living Without Love’ and ‘Deliver Me From Adam’ to name a few.
