President Gerald Ford gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. He won the National Book Award in History in the year 1980. He became the Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the year 1995. He was awarded to United States Military Acadamy at West Point with Sylvanus Thayer Award in 2000.
He also got Israel’s Presidential Medal in 2012. The very next year he got Henry A. Grunwald Award for his service to the public.
