Born on 5th October in the year 1958 in the borough of Manhattan, he was second out of the three children his parents had. His family lived in Bronx, his mother had a Puerto Rican descent and was a gerontologist. His father Cyril deGrasse Tyson was an acclaimed sociologist.
He did his entire schooling from Bronx and then studied at Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, and subsequently joined the famed Bronx High School for Science. Here he became the captain of the wrestling team along with being the editor-in-chief of the Physical Science Journal.
His interest in astronomy developed when he first visited the sky theater in the Hayden Planetarium. He attended the astronomy classes provided by the planetarium during his high school. He started lecturing on the subject by the time he was 15.
He went to Harvard to study physics and was also active in wrestling, and dancing. He completed his MA in the field of astronomy in the year 1983 from the University of Texas. He also did a doctorate degree in astrophysics from Columbia University in 1991.
Tyson is legally wedded to Alice Young, and they live in Lower Manhattan. The two met in a physics lecture in University of Texas, and then got married in the year 1988. They also have two lovely children together, daughter Miranda and son Travis.
He became a part of the Hayden Planetarium in the year 1994 when he joined there in the capacity of a staff scientist. The next year he was promoted to being the director of the planetarium in acting capacity and oversaw the $210 Million reconstruction project of the site. Leading to its completion in 2000.
He has authored multiple books on astronomy, in the year 1995, he began writing the ‘Universe’ column for the magazine ‘Natural History’. He was appointed to highly respected Commission on the Future for the United States Aerospace Industry in the year 2001 by the then-President George W. Bush.
The columns that wrote for the ‘Universe’ from the year 1995 – 2001 were also published in his book ‘Death by the Black Hole’ (2007), ‘Astrophysics for People in a Hurry’ (2017). He was also writing a monthly column in the magazine ‘Star Date’ where he answered queries regarding the universe using the pen name ‘Merlin’. Content from these columns was taken and published in his book ‘Merlin’s tour of the Universe’ and ‘Just Visiting This Planet’.
He also hosted the T.V show ‘NOVA ScienceNow’, podcast ‘StarTalk’, ‘Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey’.

He was honored with the “NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal” in the year 2004 for serving on the Moon, Mars and Beyond commission. He was also awarded the ‘Public Welfare Medal’ in the year 2015 by U.S National Academy of Sciences for creating more interest and awareness about wonders of science.
