Tom Joyner was born to Frances and Hercules L. Joyner on November 23, 1949. He was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. Tom Joyner’s family has a profound educational background. In fact, his grandfather, Oscar Joyner was one of the only three thousand black men to practice medicine in his time all over America. His family is one of those, which whole heartedly celebrate their black culture and roots. His parents were both graduates from institutes which were founded on black traditions. His brother, Albert and he were alumni of Tuskegee Institute, also known as the Tuskegge University, which is highly regarded and historically renowned to have a black tradition. He majored in Sociology, from the institute. He also had great interest in music, which led him to join a band during his time at college. They named it “The Commodores”. Lionel Richie was Tom Joyner’s school friend and also a member of this band. However, this music venture failed miserably, at least in financial terms. At this point, Tom Joyner’s parents suggested him to tread a different career path and he did that. Tom Joyner has been married twice, first to Dora and then to Donna Richardson. He started his career in radio at a station in Montgomery, Alabama. He worked in several stations throughout the region before moving to Chicago in 1978. In Chicago, he found his first job at WVON, but he soon quit to take up a job at a rival station, WBMX-FM. However, he left it too in favour of another station, WJPC-AM. This station was owned by the owner of the black magazine, “Jet and Ebony”.
In 1985, Tom Joyner was offered two jobs simultaneously. One was at a station in Dallas, while the other one was in Chicago. Interestingly, instead of choosing one of them, Tom Joyner decided to take both and he used to commute between the two cities by plane every day. He did this eight straight years. It was in 1994 that he was signed by ABC radio. This was the beginning of his nationally syndicated show, “The Tom Joyner Morning Show”. His show featured, along with him, a line of comedians and commentators, who discussed issues from news, sports, entertainment etc.
In his show, he mostly played Rock and Blues music. It also featured guests and its sponsor, the Southwest Airlines gave away regular round trips to any destination that the airline flies to. He has also been part of a 2005 television show telecasted nationally called “The Tom Joyner Show”.
