DRAM was born as Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith on the 3rd of August, 1988 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany. Growing up, he was prone to moving to different places being raised by a military mother, Gwen Jones. He grew up in Hampton, Virginia. The quiet town wasn’t really well suited for his artistic endeavors and he spent quite a lot of his time with his grandparents who went to church often.
The choir singing exposed him to music early on thus, nurturing his interest. He attended Spratley Middle School where he was first exposed to the rap and hip hop scene. He later attended Hampton High School from where he graduated in 2006 and later went on to attend Kentucky State University. After his high school, DRAM juggled numerous odd jobs to make ends meet. He cites artists, like Pharrell Williams and Missy Elliot as his source of inspiration.
DRAM’S advent in music began with his first performance in the Coliseum Mall in his hometown of Hampton, Virginia. He and his friend, Key performed some of their raps and that was the beginning of all his future musical endeavors. After finishing up with middle school, he joined a youth choir, ‘Soul Direction’, which helped him realize his passion for performing and music. The years 2005-2009 saw him juggling many odd jobs, one of which was at a call center.
In 2008, he started experimenting with music and self-recorded several songs under the stage name, DRAMA j. In 2015, he released #1 Epic. This masterpiece included his hit single, “Cha Cha”. In the October of the same year, he released his debut mixtape. After a year, in the month of April 2016, DRAM released his single, “Brocolli”. The track was a huge success and was received successfully worldwide. The track charted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
Apart from rapping and hip hop, DRAM also has given multiple talk show appearances. He appeared on the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in October 2016. He also features on the song “Blessings” with Chance the Rapper, TY Dolla Sign, Anthony Hamilton and Raury. DRAM released his highly anticipated debut album, “Big Daddy DRAM” on October 2016.
The album garnered mainstream interest and was received well worldwide. The album charted at #19 in US, #12 in US R&B, #10 in US rap and #55 in Canada. It sold around 500,000 copies in US and was certified gold by RIAA. DRAM has also collaborated with Gorillaz, the notorious British band, for their single “Andromeda”.
