Funkmaster Flex Early Life
Born on August 5, 1968 in The Bronx, to DJ Aston George Taylor Sr, Aston Jr began to be drawn to the nightclub scene at the age of 16. He found himself acting as a DJ for such events form an early age.
When he was 19, he landed a gig at WRKS 98.7 Kiss-FM with Chuck Chillout in New York. He eventually left their team and moved on to work with 107.5 WBLS-FM.
In the 1990’s Aston began to play at nightclubs belonging to Vito Bruno. Bruno managed to convince Joel Salkowitz, who was one of the executives of Hot 97, to broadcast Aston’s music live. It garnered a wide audience and so Aston came to be known as Funkmaster Flex and had his own show from 1992. Hs signature ‘bomb drops’ are well loved by his audiences.

In the 1990’s Flex had also signed a deal with Loud Records and had released, 60 Minutes of Funk. In 1998, he along with seven of the most respected DJ’s in New York, Biz Markie, “BounceMasta” Doo Wop, DJ Enuff, Mister Cee, Frankie Cutlass, DJ Riz, Cipha Sounds, Big Kap, and Mark Ronson released an LP together.
1999 saw the release of The Tunnel which had songs by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Eminem, LL Cool J, Dr Dre, Nas, and DMX.
His first television appearance was in Yo! MTV Raps.
2003 saw him star in his own television series called the Ride with Funkmaster Flex as well as The Funkmaster Flex Super Series Invitational.
In 2007, ESPN roped him in to host their show, All Muscle with Funkmaster Flex, which made Aston focus on cars as well as interview star athletes. He was also host of the show, Car Wars with Funkmaster Flex.
2010 saw Aston going back to MTV to be a part of the show, Funk Flex Full Throttle.
2014 saw him being part of the reality TV series on VH1, called The Hot 97.
