James Newell Osterberg Jr., known by his stage name, Iggy Pop was born on April 21, 1947, in Muskegon, Michigan. His father, James Newell Osterberg was a baseball coach and his mother, Louella was an English teacher at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan. His family is of German and Irish descent. His father was adopted by a Swedish family and hence the surname, Osterberg.
Iggy did his schooling in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was a part of various bands. Right from the childhood, Iggy was interested in learning different forms of music. Iggy along with his producer, Bowie started solo albums like, ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Lust For Life.’ He was also a part of a heavy metal album called ‘Instinct.’
