Neil was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario. Young listened to doo-wop, R&B, Country, rock n roll, rockabilly and western pop at his young age. When he was at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg, he played in many instrumental rock bands. His first stable band was The Squires which was played in several dance halls and clubs in Winnipeg and Ontario.
Young began to play music himself on a plastic ukulele. He formed his first band when he was enrolled at Earl Grey Junior High School. The band is known as the Jades however his stable band was The Squires. The band played at Fort William and recorded series of nibbles. After ‘The Squires’ Neil joined and worked along the folk clubs in Winnipeg where he wrote many excellent folk songs such as “Sugar Mountain”.
